Materials

This hybrid mattress is made of layers of latex foam and a coil spring system typical of traditional mattresses. The Eco Terra is made from a blend of organic cotton and has an organic wool fire barrier. The 3-inch latex layer is made of Talalay latex which is more conducive to breathability than dense Dunlop latex. There are 16 coils used in this mattress made of upcycled Gauge steel and individually encased in fabric. The entire mattress is constructed in Eco Terra’s California factory without the use of harmful chemicals.

Our Eco Terra mattress review draws upon test data from sleep technology experts. Considerations include how the construction and materials used in the Eco Terra mattress impact its performance in support, motion transfer, temperature regulation, and ease of movement.

Latex

Using a 3-inch latex layer in the Eco Terra effectively relieves pressure points at the hips and shoulders.  This 3-inch latex layer helps evenly distribute your body weight across the surface of the mattress. The relative softness of this material allows the mattress to lightly envelop the form of the sleeper, thus allowing the whole body to relax and release tension.

A thick layer of latex also allows for ease of movement as this softer material is conducive to creating bounce. This is particularly advantageous for side sleepers, restless sleepers, or those who like to change positions throughout the night.

Cotton and Wool

The cotton and wool used in this mattress are instrumental components in the effective heat regulation that defines this mattress. The cotton cover repels moisture while the wool insulation layer traps heat away from the sleeper’s body.

Steel Coils

Steel coils in the Eco Terra serve a plurality of uses. Coils help promote circulation, which aids temperature regulation. Furthermore, the fabric-encased coils help isolate movement allowing you to shift in your sleep without moving the whole bed; a problem sometimes present in coil or hybrid mattresses.

Certifications

  1. GOTS Cotton: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) ensures that the mattress is 95% or more organic fibers. Additionally, a GOTS certification requires that all chemicals used in the production of the mattress not surpass a certain level of toxicity.
  1. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Latex and Wool: This certification is internationally accepted and ensures that a product is not contaminated with toxic chemicals harmful to the consumer’s health.

Downsides

  1. Limited 3rd party certifications. While the Eco Terra is GOTS and OEKO-TEX certified, it lacks several important certifications. Most notably, the Eco Terra mattress does not have a Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certification. To achieve this certification, a mattress must be composed of more than 95% organic raw materials and contain a limited amount of toxic substances. Other missing certifications include CertiPUR-US, GreenGuard, Cradle to Cradle, Rainforest alliance, Eco Institut, and Fair Trade.
  1. No zippered cover. Like most hybrid mattresses, the Eco Terra does not come with a zippered cover. For those looking to swap or remove the latex comfort layer, this may be an issue. This should be a minor issue, however, as button tufting keeps the layers of the mattress from shifting, and thus the latex should not need adjustment.

Eco Terra Mattress Review Summary

The Eco Terra Mattress is an affordable natural mattress suited to sleepers across a broad range of sleeping positions and body weights. As a hybrid mattress, the Eco Terra is both supportive and comfortable. It is conducive to movement while offering good support for pressure points across the body.

Where this mattress excels is in its ability to regulate temperature. If you sleep hot, the Eco Terra is an excellent option among competing natural mattresses.
