There are certain things you can do to alleviate chronic back pain. Try sleeping with a cushion or pillow under your knees or lying in the fetal position. Both these positions can help relieve the strain that you may be experiencing. Have someone look at your spine while you are lying on your side on your mattress. Is it aligned and straight? If not, check the surface of your mattress to make sure it doesn’t have any valleys or indentations. Some low-density polyurethane foam in the top layers of mattresses can wear out over a short period of time and lose the ability to adequately support your back. To check if your mattress is worn out, pull a string across your mattress. Is there a space between the string and the top of the mattress? If so, it may be time to invest in a natural latex mattress. Natural latex foam is not only more environmentally friendly, but it’s also more durable, responsive and supportive than polyurethane foam. It feels buoyant, like if you were sleeping on a water bed, but without the waviness. Try it out to see if it influences the state of your back pain.
