Check out the latex mattress comparison table above for details on the best brands and models.

Hybrid Cut

Here is a cross-cut of a hybrid (foam+coils) natural latex mattress. From top to bottom, most natural latex mattresses are made with a cotton cover, a wool cushioning and fire barrier, 1-2 layers of natural latex foam, a coil unit, and a bottom cover. Natural Latex mattresses are free of toxic fire retardants, glues, and VOCs. They are at least 3X more durable than a standard poly mattress, and some models are customizable at home thanks to a zippered cover.

Why sleep on a natural latex mattress instead of a polyurethane mattress?

A Natural latex mattress is a long-term investment for your body and mind. It won’t sag like a polyurethane, gel, or memory foam mattress and won’t poison you with off-gassing chemicals. The raw materials for natural latex mattresses are also sustainably grown and harvested.

Natural Latex Mattresses – Learn The Basics

The basic natural latex mattress comparison chart lets you sort the table by mattress type. Natural latex mattresses come in two basic types: latex core and hybrid. Here are the main differences between the two: Latex core, a.k.an all-latex mattress.

  • Latex layers of different firmness are stacked on top of each other to form the mattress’s core.
  • Customizable mattresses are typically latex core mattresses. You can open the zippered mattress cover and switch out the different layers.
  • Latex core mattresses have less “bounce” than hybrid mattresses. But, this is not necessarily a disadvantage. My current mattress is the latex core mattress from Spindle. I am quite pleased with it.
  • People weighing over 210 pounds should sleep on a hybrid mattress rather than a latex core mattress.
all-latex mattress

Spindle latex core mattress. The cover has been removed for demonstration purposes.

Hybrid, a.k.a spring coil

  • A fabric-encased spring layer forms the base of the mattress. One or more comfort layers of natural latex mattress foam are stacked on top of this layer. Thus, the bed’s core combines spring coils and natural latex mattress foam.
  • Typically, hybrid mattresses are not customizable. However, some hybrid mattresses offer customization. The Happsy mattress seems to provide a zippered cover and could be customized with a latex mattress foam layer with a different firmness.
  • Hybrid mattresses have more bounce than latex core mattresses.
  • Hybrid mattresses can support more weight without bottoming out. Consider this type of mattress if you are over 210 lbs.
Hybrid, a.k.a spring coil

This is a cross-section of typical hybrid mattress construction. The latex and wool comfort layers are stacked on top of a spring coil layer. The latex layers in this mattress are zoned for maximum comfort for your body. The latex gives you more pressure relief around the hips and shoulders.

Selecting the thickness of a natural latex mattress

Once you have selected the type of mattress (hybrid or latex core) best suited to your body type, you can look at the different mattress thicknesses available. Use the comparison chart above to sort the mattresses by thickness. Click “thickness” on the header, and the chart will reorganize itself from thinnest to thickest. Click “thickness” again to sort the chart from thickest to thinnest. Do you like Super Plush Latex Mattresses?

If you are looking for a latex mattress with a lot of pressure relief and bounce, I recommend the 13-inch Avocado Green. The 12-inch Plush Beds Luxury Bliss is also an excellent choice for those who like a  plush latex mattress. Although these latex mattress models are similar in construction, they vary in firmness. Side sleepers will get more benefits from a plush mattress. People love the plush feel of this mattress. And, since it is a hybrid latex foam bed, it can handle heavier body weights. The  Avocado Green and the Plush Beds Luxury Bliss are both medium-firm. These two models are great for back sleepers and all-around sleepers. Less pressure relief is needed since a back sleeper’s body weight is more evenly distributed on the latex mattress foam. In the back sleeper’s case, a medium-firm mattress is more adequate.

How To Choose a Mattress

You may not need a thick mattress (12+ inches) if you are lighter than average (below 160 pounds). If you are around the 150-pound range, you may not need as thick a latex comfort layer as you would if you were around the 250-pound range. A person with a lighter body weight will not compress as much foam as a heavier one. General rules for comfort layer selection 150-pound range: A 2-inch latex mattress foam comfort layer or above is sufficient. If you fall within this weight range, your body will only compress a certain amount of latex. The remainder of the foam will be underutilized, and selecting a slightly thinner mattress will save you hundreds of dollars in some cases. If you fall within this weight range, you might be interested in taking a look at the following mattresses:

How To Choose a Mattress

The 10-inch Natural Bliss by Plush Beds

There are many other models to choose from for this weight range. To see more selections, please consult the NaturalMattressFinder.com complete comparison chart. Anything above 11 inches is unnecessary unless you want the most luxurious mattress. 210+ pound range: I recommend choosing a hybrid mattress (spring coil bottom layer) with at least 3 inches of natural latex mattress foam for the comfort layer. Some latex core mattresses have more than 3 inches of latex mattress foam. However, an all-latex mattress is not recommended for the 210+pound weight range because the latex foam may bottom out and not relieve pressure adequately. Any foam mattress will bottom out, whether made of polyurethane or latex. If you fall within the 250+ pound weight range, you might be interested in looking at the following mattresses. All of the models below are hybrid mattresses (fabric-encased coils + 100% natural latex foam):

More options are available to you if you are within this weight range. Consult NaturalMattressFinder.com‘s complete comparison chart to compare all the best natural latex hybrid mattresses available online.

Chemicals and VOCsChemicals and VOCs

Latex mattress foam is made without the use of toxic chemicals. Some non-toxic chemicals are used in the Dunlop and Talalay latex foam manufacturing process to stabilize the latex sap before curing. The Dunlop latex manufacturing process will utilize fewer non-toxic chemicals than the Talalay process because it is simpler and requires fewer steps. Check out my post about Dunlop vs. Talalay latex to learn about the differences between the two types of foam. Get an insight into the steps in transforming the rubber tree latex sap into the most durable bedding foam on the planet (on average, 4X more durable than polyurethane foam and more comfortable and responsive).

Latex mattress reviews

I have had the privilege of doing some “hands-on” reviews for latex mattresses. Spindle was generous enough to send me their 10-inch latex core mattress for a hands-on review. The mattress arrived at my door in three separate boxes. This made it easy to move it to the setup location. The latex mattress is very heavy once it is all assembled, but being able to open the cover and move the components separately was a definite advantage. It was fairly easy to assemble, and I enjoyed sleeping on it. Check out my full video review of the Spindle latex mattress and the detailed article that goes over all the mattress specifications.

I have done several other latex mattress reviews, such as the Standard and Pillow Top by Avocado Green and the Botanical Bliss by Plush Beds.

Latex mattress pros and cons

Cons:

  • Cost: 3rd-party certified natural latex mattresses come at a premium price but are a premium product. A natural latex mattress lasts at least 4x longer than a polyurethane mattress.
  • Weight: Some natural latex mattresses weigh 130 – 150 pounds for a queen.
  • Testing: You can’t try before you buy, but most mattresses on NaturalMattressFinder.com feature a 100+ night sleep trial.
  • Limited delivery options: A natural latex mattress will be delivered to your door, but you are responsible for bringing it into the house and setting it up. Some latex mattress brands offer “white glove” delivery depending on your location.
  • Old mattress removal options vary: you are responsible for removing your old mattress.

Pros:

  • Durability: Natural latex is very resilient and will last several times longer than a polyurethane mattress (gel foam, memory foam). Check out my report on a 50-year-old Dunlop latex mattress.
  • Many firmness options: this depends on the model and manufacturer.
  • Environmentally friendly: Natural latex is a biodegradable plant-based material. Cotton and wool are also biodegradable. The coils must be removed and recycled if it is a hybrid mattress.
  • Comfort: Natural latex foam has unique contouring and responsive and pressure-relieving qualities, so it is one of the best investments you can make in terms of comfort.
  • No Off-Gassing: All-natural latex mattresses made from plant or animal-based materials from top to bottom will not time-release VOCs into your living environment.
  • No chemical fire retardants: Most latex mattress brands use sheep’s wool as the fire retardant layer.
  • An excellent option for allergy sufferers and chemically sensitive people: Natural latex mattresses are hypoallergenic and are unlikely to cause allergic reactions. Please be cautious if you know you have an allergy to natural latex.
  • Less partner disturbance: Natural latex attenuates motion. Fabric-encased coils used by most latex mattress brands isolate movement, so your partner won’t wake you up.
  • Better heat regulation: Natural latex is very breathable when compared to polyurethane. It does not sleep hot like memory foam, which traps heat and moisture. Cotton and wool also do a great job of wicking away moisture and helping you to sleep cool.
  • No toxic chemicals: The few chemicals used in the natural latex manufacturing process are non-toxic and don’t emit harmful VOCs.

Natural latex mattress for back pain

100% natural latex foam, as long as it is not blended with synthetic foam, has some unique qualities that make it ideal for back pain sufferers.

  1. Contouring: Natural latex mattresses offer excellent contouring. It adapts itself to every curve of your body.
  2. Responsive: It rebounds instantly. Think of the extreme opposite of memory foam; natural latex foam is what you get. The responsive quality of the foam makes changing sleeping positions effortless.
  3. Pressure relief: I had a sensation when sleeping on the Spindle natural latex mattress: it was like a water bed but without the waviness. It is a very buoyant feeling and quite different from polyurethane.

When combined with proper targeted exercise and physiotherapy, a natural latex mattress may aid back pain sufferers in getting rid of the chronic discomfort they experience.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Mattress

Choosing the right mattress can be daunting, especially if you’re unsure what to look for. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a mattress:

Comfort

Comfort is a crucial factor when choosing a mattress. A comfortable mattress should conform to your body shape and adequately support your pressure points. The comfort level of a mattress is subjective, and what works for one person may not work for another. Therefore, trying out different mattresses to find one that suits your comfort needs is essential.

Support

Support is another crucial factor to consider when choosing a mattress. A mattress should provide adequate support to your spine and keep it in a natural alignment. A mattress that is too soft may not provide enough support, while a mattress that is too firm may cause discomfort and pain.

Durability

A mattress is a long-term investment, and you must ensure it lasts several years. A durable mattress should be made of high-quality materials and have sturdy construction. Look for mattresses with a warranty, as this can give you an idea of the mattress’s durability.

Price

Mattresses come in different price ranges, and you want to find one that fits your budget. However, don’t compromise on the quality and comfort of the mattress to save a few bucks. Remember, a good mattress is an investment in your health and well-being.

Types of Mattresses – All-Foam and Hybrid

There are two main types of mattresses – all-foam and hybrid. Let’s take a closer look at each type:

All-Foam Mattresses

All-foam mattresses are made of different layers of foam, including memory foam and polyfoam. These mattresses are known for their excellent contouring capabilities, which means they can conform to your body shape and provide excellent pressure relief. All-foam mattresses are also great at isolating motion, so you won’t be disturbed by your partner’s movements during the night.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine the best of both worlds – foam and coils. These mattresses typically have a layer of foam on top, followed by a layer of coils. Hybrid mattresses are known for their excellent support and bounce, making them a great option for couples.

Pros and Cons of Each Type of Mattress: All-Foam and Hybrid

Both all-foam and hybrid mattresses have their pros and cons. Let’s take a closer look:

All-Foam Mattresses

Pros

  • Excellent contouring capabilities
  • Great pressure relief
  • Good motion isolation
  • No noise

Cons

  • Can sleep hot
  • May lack support for heavier individuals
  • May not be as durable as hybrid mattresses

Hybrid Mattresses

Pros

  • Great support and bounce
  • Good temperature regulation
  • Longer lifespan than all-foam mattresses

Cons

  • May transfer motion more than all-foam mattresses
  • May be noisy
  • May be more expensive than all-foam mattresses

Mattress Firmness and Support

The firmness and support of a mattress are crucial factors to consider when choosing a mattress. Here’s what you need to know:

Firmness

Mattress firmness refers to how soft or firm a mattress is. The firmness level is usually measured on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. Your ideal firmness level depends on your sleeping position and preference.

Support

Mattress support refers to how well a mattress keeps your spine in a natural alignment. A mattress with adequate support can help alleviate back pain and improve sleep quality.

Mattress Size Guide

Choosing the right mattress size is also essential. Here’s a size guide to help you choose the right size:

  • Twin: 38″ x 75″
  • Twin XL: 38″ x 80″
  • Full: 54″ x 75″
  • Queen: 60″ x 80″
  • King: 76″ x 80″
  • California King: 72″ x 84″

Natural Latex Mattress Brands – Top-Rated and Popular Options

Avocado Green Mattress

The Avocado Green Mattress is an eco-friendly 100% natural latex, organic cotton, and wool mattress. This mattress is known for its excellent support and comfort and is a great option for those with allergies.

PlushBeds Botanical Bliss

The PlushBeds Botanical Bliss is another natural latex mattress made of 100% organic latex. This customizable mattress allows you to choose the firmness level and thickness that suits your needs.

Zenhaven

The Zenhaven is a luxury natural latex mattress made of Talalay latex. This mattress is known for its excellent comfort and support and is a great option for those looking for a high-end mattress.

Mattress Buying Guide – Tips and Considerations

Here are some tips and considerations to keep in mind when buying a mattress:

Try Before You Buy

It’s essential to try out different mattresses before making a purchase. Most mattress stores offer a trial period, allowing you to test the mattress for a few nights before deciding if it’s right.

Look for a Good Warranty and Return Policy

A good warranty and return policy can give you peace of mind and protect your investment. Look for mattresses with a warranty of at least 10 years and a generous return policy.

Don’t Forget About Price

While you don’t want to compromise on the quality and comfort of the mattress, you also don’t want to overspend. Look for a mattress that fits your budget and offers value for money.

The Importance of a Good Mattress for Quality Sleep

A good mattress is essential for quality sleep. A comfortable and supportive mattress can help alleviate back pain, reduce stress, and improve sleep quality. On the other hand, sleeping on an uncomfortable or unsupportive mattress can cause discomfort and pain, leading to poor sleep quality and even sleep deprivation.

Other Considerations When Buying a Mattress – Warranty, Return Policy, Price

When buying a mattress, there are a few other factors to consider:

Warranty

A good warranty can protect your investment and give you peace of mind. Look for mattresses that come with a warranty of at least 10 years.

Return Policy

A generous return policy can allow you to try out the mattress and return it if it’s not right. Look for mattresses that offer a trial period and a hassle-free return policy.

Price

Mattresses come in different price ranges, and you want to find one that fits your budget. However, don’t compromise on the quality and comfort of the mattress just to save a few bucks.

Tips for Maintaining Your Mattress and Prolonging Its Lifespan

Here are some tips for maintaining your mattress and prolonging its lifespan:

Rotate Your Mattress

Rotating your mattress can help evenly distribute the wear and tear, prolonging its lifespan.

Use a Mattress Protector

A mattress protector can protect your mattress from spills, stains, and dust mites, prolonging its lifespan.

Keep Your Mattress Clean

Regularly vacuuming your mattress can help remove dust and debris, keeping it clean and hygienic.

Conclusion and Final Thoughts

Choosing the right mattress is essential for quality sleep and overall well-being. Our ultimate latex mattress comparison chart can help you decide and find the perfect mattress for your needs.
